Xiamen University(厦门大学)


XMU, established in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is the first Chinese university founded by an overseas Chinese. The University is a comprehensive institution of higher education directly affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education, and it has recently been chosen for inclusion in the Chinese Government’s Program of Building World-Class Universities and World-Class Disciplines. Since its inception, XMU has produced more than 300,000 graduates, and over 60 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering have studied or worked at XMU. In recent years, in parallel with the steady rise of China’s national strength and international influence, XMU has advanced by leaps and bounds, approaching the world’s highest standard for academic disciplines, scientific research, and educational quality. The University was placed among the world’s top 400 institutions in various authoritative world university rankings, such as THE, QS, US News and ARWU and is expected to rise higher in the ranking charts on its way to world-class university status. As one of the earliest institutions in China to offer courses to overseas students, XMU currently has over 3,400 international students from over 130 countries and regions.

(1) Siming Campus Accommodation: The overseas student apartment buildings on the Siming Campus are set in picturesque surroundings and enjoy a view of the sea and fresh air. Newly admitted students on Siming campus could apply online for on-campus accommodation.
(2) Off-Siming-Campus Accommodation: Living off-campus provides greater opportunities to interact with the locals and to learn about the local community and culture. Students can choose to rent off-campus apartments and the monthly rental is around RMB 2, 000 per room.
(3) Xiang’an Campus Accommodation: The student apartments are equipped with a comprehensive range of amenities, with all rooms containing a private bathroom, a telephone, an air conditioner, Internet access points, a water heater, a safe, etc.

Student Service

International students can truly feel the care of the university as if they were in their home countries. There is a fortnightly breakfast with the university president, during which the president will seek students’ feedback. Regularly held language saloons include the Chinese corner, the English corner, and the French corner. The Chinese Bridge Contest, the Xiamen International Marathon Race and the XMU Foreign Karaoke Contest are among the most popular competitions on campus for international students. The University hosts celebrations for major holidays observed by international students, such as Spring Festival and Water-splashing Festival. It is one of the unique sights on campus that a great many international students practice Tai Chi boxing and swords by the Furong Lake.

School Calendar

Xiamen University follows a tri-semester academic calendar, with autumn, spring and summer semesters as follows:
Autumn semester: mid-September to late January;
Spring semester: mid-February to mid-June;
Summer semester: mid-June to late July;
Winter vacation: late January to mid-February;
Summer vacation: late July to early September;
Teaching hours: Monday through Friday: 08:00–11:50 and 14:30–17:30.

Campus View

XMU campuses are situated around the Xiamen Bay, opposite Taiwan across the sea, commanding a beautiful view of green hills and the blue sea. It boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. Located on the southern tip of Xiamen Island, the Siming Campus lies in close proximity to several places of interest and is adjacent to a sliver beach. The newly built Xiang’an Campus is situated in Xiang’an District of Xiamen, bounded by the Xiangshan Scenic Area on the north and the sea on the south. XMU campuses resemble a beautiful garden, with serene lakes, lush foliage and buildings of the unique Kah Kee architectural style.


The 12th Confucius Institute Conference was held in Xi’an from December 12th to 13th, centering on “Deepen Cooperation, Developing through Innovation, Working Together to Build a Community of Shared Future for Mankind”. Nearly 2,500 university presidents and representatives of Confucius Institutes from over 140 countries and regions conducted a two-day discussion on the theme of promoting the in-depth cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities through the platform of Confucius Institutes and the Confucius Institute's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative. Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the State Council and Chairwoman of the Council of Confucius Institute Headquarters attended and delivered a keynote speech. Delegates from Xiamen University (XMU) including Zhang Yan, Secretary of the CPC Xiamen University Committee, Zhan Xinli, Vice President of Xiamen University, and representatives of the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters/Office of Confucius Institute Affairs attended the conference.

Chinese proficiency requirement: Applicants for programs in the Humanities, Economics, Management, Law and Traditional Chinese Medicine should score 210 or above in new HSK 5; applicants for programs in Sciences, Engineering and Medicine should score 210 or above in new HSK 4.
English proficiency requirement: Applicants should score 80 or above in TOEFL, or alternatively, score 6.0 or above in IELTS. In case that one cannot provide either, other internationally recognized and equivalent certificate may also be sufficient. Native English speakers are exempted from this requirement.
Note: Applicants who finished their highest degree programs completely in Chinese or English are exempted from the requirement of Language Proficiency Certificate, but a Medium-of-Instruction Certificate should be furnished.

Tuition Fees & Scholarships

The tuition fee and cost of living at XMU are relatively low compared with most of the other major universities in China and beyond. A good variety of scholarships are available to international students, including Chinese Government Scholarships, Confucius Institute Scholarships, Confucius China Study Plan Scholarships, Fujian Provincial Government Scholarships, Xiamen Tan Kah Kee Scholarships and Xiamen University Scholarships. Full scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, food, healthcare and insurance costs, while partial scholarships cover one or several items under full scholarships.

Other Features

International Exchange and Cooperation:
XMU is becoming increasingly internationalized and is actively engaged in multilateral and global cooperation. The University has established partnerships with nearly 300 institutions of higher learning around the world. It also actively participates in exchange programs and collaborative research projects, and regularly hosts international symposia. XMU is the Chinese partners for 16 Confucius Institutes worldwide and plays an active role on multilateral cooperation platforms, such as the Global Engineering Education Exchange (GE3), the Global U8 Consortium, the EU’s Erasmus Mundus, and the ASEAN University Network. XMU has hosted a wide variety of events, such as the San Diego State University Day, the Southampton University Day, and the China-Japan University Presidents Forum. It has also staged Xiamen University Day events at its partner universities. XMU students have opportunities during their studies at the University to participate in various academic exchange programs or pursue further studies at world-renowned universities.
First-Class Facilities:
XMU boast a comprehensive range of teaching and research facilities and an efficient public service system. The University’s library holds a collection of over 4.1 million paper books and 4.9 million e-books. Furthermore, the University’s high-speed information network is among the most sophisticated in China. The XMU Knowledge Resource Portal offers students access to an enormous body of literature online. Through the library, students can visit other renowned universities’ libraries in China and beyond.
